About This Spot

Master Congee is a humble yet bustling corner tucked into the lively streets of Tsim Sha Tsui, where the intimate space invites a communal rhythm that feels both familiar and unpretentious. As you step inside, the soft hum of early morning chatter blends with the clatter of bowls and the steady steam rising from pots, creating a comforting backdrop to your visit. The restaurant’s snug quarters mean the pace here is unhurried but steady, filled with locals quietly savoring each bowl while strangers steadily become fellow diners in a shared moment of simple nourishment.

The atmosphere at Master Congee is defined by its authentic everyday charm. The worn wooden seats and the well-used counters tell stories of countless mornings and afternoons spent indulging in warm bowls of congee, punctuated only by stirs of tea and the occasional pause to appreciate the crispy texture of freshly fried dough sticks. These sticks, golden and light with a delicate crispiness, often appear wrapped in silky rice noodle rolls, bringing together playful contrasts of texture and temperature that feel like an earnest dialogue between flavors.

There’s an understated poetry in how the dishes here unfold—whether it’s the gentle smoothness of the fresh fish porridge, the hearty presence of pork and liver varieties, or the quiet satisfaction of traditional snacks passed across the counter. In every sip and bite, there’s a sense of local life being quietly celebrated: early risers mingling before their day begins, neighbors making this their favorite spot for a quick and steady breakfast, and visitors catching a glimpse of Hong Kong’s culinary heart beyond the gloss of trendier locales.

While the setting might never aspire to elegant refinement, its strength lies in its genuine, grounded warmth. Master Congee’s ambiance is a bridge between fleeting fuel for the day and a moment of solace — a reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful experiences come wrapped in simple, well-loved food and the gentle bustle of ordinary company.

The place was quite small and crowed but the poridge taste nice, pork and liver is good, the frying stick taste oily a bit but cripsy and worth trying

Good food but not worth the hype or a wait. Went at 7:30am on a Saturday and had to wait around 10mins. Plenty of other great options in the area. The rice rolls and fried noodles were good. Super fresh & crispy dried dough stick that wasn’t oily. Wasn’t a huge fan of the fresh fish congee. Felt it lacked flavour compared to classics like pork & century egg. There were also small bones so you’ll need to be skilled at removing them as you eat.

June 2025 We enjoyed the long fried dough (bread stick) tremendously. The porridge kind of bland, however good steam shrimp dough. So many wonderful choices. The only down side was the restroom at the back alley. Worth a look at the real life of Hong Kong people.

The congee and you tiao here is delicious!! Went back for 3 days straight!! Staff was not rude too and service was prompt! Note that they only accept cash or octopus payment:)

We loved Master Congee so much that we went twice during our Hong Kong trip! It’s always busy, so be sure to arrive early — we came around 9:15 AM and still saw a steady flow of customers. That’s how you know it’s good. The congee is absolutely outstanding — warm, smooth, and fragrant with rice. I ordered the abalone and fresh fish congee, and it was delicious. The fish was clean-tasting and the abalone tender. My friend had the pork liver congee, and the liver was incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked — no bitterness, just soft and flavorful. We also enjoyed the fried Chinese dough sticks (“youtiao”). They serve two types: • The oval one is slightly sweet. • The long one is savory, and that’s our favorite — super crunchy outside, soft and chewy inside. It paired perfectly with the congee. Don’t miss the stir-fried noodles either — simple but flavorful, and they complement the congee so well. Despite being packed, the staff was polite and efficient. Prices are very reasonable for the quality you get. The only downside is that the restaurant is quite small, and you may need to share a table with other diners, but honestly, the food is so worth it that we didn’t mind at all. Highly recommend this spot if you’re in Tsim Sha Tsui — congee lovers, don’t miss it!

This place serve great rice roll with bread dough. Very yummy. Love the food especially the rice roll. They have great porridge as well. Price is very reasonable. Only thing is a bit cramped.

Great value for congee menu. Big portion. For tasting, it is OK. Recommend in rice noodle roll menu. If you come early, you will wait not long. If late morning, will have many queue because this restaurant has few tables.
